Mage's Square

Mage's Square

The first site you see as you travel down main street is the Mage's Square, although the name may be confusing as the statue standing in the middle of the square is no wizard. His name was "Thelencus Morovic", and it says so on the little copper plaque you can't see on account of the apple vendor who has placed his stand on it. The statue shows a man dressed in robes holding a candle to light the way in his right hand and a great load of books in his left.

Thelencus was the founder of the Arylon Library, and in his honor the church of Oghma donated funds to build this statue. Thelencus made one mistake when he raised his life's work; he didn't sacrifice to Beshaba, goddess of bad luck, when he built the Library. This seemed to incite her wrath. Termites were the first visitors to the library. After them came lightning and then a fire which started from nowhere. Thelencus fought them all, and with Oghma's blessing saved his library. However, two years after the library was built, he died when a bookcase fell on his head and his candle fell from his hand and ignited the whole library. Almost everything was lost before the fire was put out.

In his honor, spells were weaved into the statue. The first was a simple continual light on his candle; the second was a magic mouth (activated at twilight) which tells a different story each evening from the vast collection of stories in the library. Many Arylon children gather in the Mage's Square at twilight to hear these stories. Why do they call it Mage's Square you ask? Well, the statue looks like a wizard, doesn't it?
