Bernard's Smithy

"A Smithy you say ?" snarled the old man. "Well lad, come with me and I will show you more than a Smith, I'll take you to a Mastersmith, the best in the Realms." Walking much more upright than could be expected from a man of his age, the old man takes you across the main street. Passing some very interesting shops on the way, you stop some distance from an old wine shop. It seems the old man vanished in the crowded street, leaving you in an alley. Just as you think you are lost, the sound of a hammer on an anvil betrays the location of the smithy.

A two story stone house stands at the end of the alley, the smithy is actually a wooden structure built in the front of the house. Greenery surrounds the house, with two trees standing in the entrance and climbing plants adoring the walls (making it quite impregnable for Ethereal or plane shifting creatures, when you come to think about it). The Smithy is run by a giant of a man named Bernard (LG hm ). Bernard is not and never was an adventurer, although he is gathering experience from the numerous thieves that pay him a visit. Bernard is incredibly strong for a man (19 muscle), and it is whispered that ogre blood runs in the family (Well he is 6'10" and has the strength of an ogre, what do you expect ?).

His craftsmanship rivals that of the dwarven smiths, it is believed that Bernard spent most of his young life at dwarven forges somewhere in the Far Hills. Bernard is first and foremost a blacksmith, he is able to shoe even the most stubborn of horses. He forges rings and small iron parts with almost godly skill. He does not forge armor for he is not an armorer but many are the cavaliers that decorate their armor in this smithy. Bernard specializes in swords, mainly long swords. High quality long swords (even from rare metals) can be ordered from the Mastersmith, it takes 1d6 weeks of concentrated work to produce such a masterpiece.

Rumors:
"Heek' Heek' lem'me tell you a story 'bout our master sm, sm, smith. A drunken dwarf once came, and he told... Heek' he told him that no one was better than dwarven smiths. So, They took an ant, an ant you hear, and they gave it to good old Bernard, good old Bernard, and he lost. What, Wha's that, Yea the dwarf, he lost the bet. The ant it still clicking around somewhere. Always walking, clicking in horse shoes, Heek"

"You know the sword Lord Byron bought from the smith. It is so finely balanced that you can balance it on its point. Its sword point and it does not fall"

Bernard is always by the forge, he is tuned to the sound and the sight of the hammer fall. There is a good chance that he will be unaware of people coming into the smithy so long as they don't touch anything (60%). Bernard stops working when he notices people and continues working only when the smithy is empty. He is unable to concentrate when other people are around. People find Bernard puzzling, he is a very intelligent man and always takes his time before answering. People of the city sometimes come here to seek advice, talking to the Mastersmith about their problems until they are tossed out of the door.

If there is one thing Bernard likes, it is a challenge, preparing gadgets and small instruments always fills him with joy. An unknown number of thieves found some very resourceful locks and bolts in the Mastersmith house, most of the thieves came out of the house swearing never to pick a lock, the rest lay in pieces on the floor around the lock.

A new addition to the Mastersmith's house is his wife. Felina Roaringhorn from the Roaringhorn family in Waterdeep. Felina was once a member in the Order of the Shooting Stars. She died while saving her brother from Lolth's clutches in the Abyss. She was then resurrected by the church of Mystra. During her recovery she happened upon the smith and the rest is history. (Felina has sworn to kill Bernard if he ever sent adventurers to bring him some Anvil from hell, and make stupid things like Grisworld Edge). Bernard has, however, fastened their wedding ring from a sky rock, but that little incident was overlooked.

Felina is a quicksilver sort of a person, and has been twice around the realms and once across the planes. Living with Bernard is her toughest quest yet. The man has some calming influence on her, and knows how to get beneath her skin. They are very much in love.
